Index

Index, is a series of large (40″ x 40″) black & white photographs. The works point to time, age, and mortality seen on the body and objects shaped by memory of the body. The series also includes locations of former occupation (houses, streets, gardens, and sites of childhood play) and experienced in spaces of memory.

The work concentrates on a combination of literal indexical references and images of remembered locations collected by the camera. The series reflects images found in the family album/archive. However, The subject of these photographs is the background context – the spaces that surround the subject of the family photo.

The compositional structures are organized to visually suggest interior states. Most of the images were made in overcast light employing the ‘pathetic fallacy’ that weather reflects interior states.
